The Renaissance
The English Renaissance:
3 big ideas: Humanists and Courtiers, A Bard for the Ages, The Sacred and the Secular. Humanists and Courtiers: New belief in humans. Humanists believed that humans could do anything. Leonardo da Vinci and Queen Elizabeth, were both great examples of humanism. Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, sculptor, and inventor. Elizabeth was multitalented, and surrounded herself with the smart, and witty. A Bard for the Ages: William Shakespeare was a brilliant playwright who gave the Elizabethan public the smiles, and tears that they asked for. People would attend plays, and more theaters were made to bring the new dramas. Dramas would test the limit of what it was like to be human. The Sacred an the Secular: Controversy of translating the Bible. Translation of the Bible to English gave Christians the power to interpret their religion. What I Believe A Tragedy NeedsA tragedy needs a person of high status, who does something to begin his downfall. He murders, is greedy, or he is not a good ruler. He then begins to lose everything he had, and endures uncommon suffering. On his downfall he begins to realize what he has done wrong, and starts to regret his choices. He then tries to make everything right or he dies with dignity. During the entire process, the audience connects with the character, and feels emotionally uplifted and enlarged. And that is what makes a good tragedy.
